Calais

Wooden Panels

One of the most exciting panel designs was inspired by Calais, the town on the narrowest point of the English Channel – just opposite Dover. The highlighted part is not mentioned in the original, i just think it’s a nice parallel between the “opposite” panels and the opposite towns. The curving hollows seem to diverge at first sight, suggesting differentness and separation, but after a few imaginary twists we can get a perfect circle and arrive at unity. This unity and spirit of cohesion characterized the 14th century burghers of Calais as well, whose heroic self-sacrifice was immortalized in the famous Rodin statue.
